TED is a nonprofit organization devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. Started as a four-day conference in California 30 years ago, TED has grown to support its mission with multiple initiatives. The two annual TED Conferences invite the world's leading thinkers and doers to speak for 18 minutes or less. Many of these talks are then made available, free, at TED.com. TED speakers have included Bill Gates, Jane Goodall, Elizabeth Gilbert, Sir Richard Branson, Nandan Nilekani, Philippe Starck, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Sal Khan and Daniel Kahneman.
The annual TED Conference takes place each spring in Vancouver, British Columbia. TED's media initiatives include TED.com, where new TED Talks are posted daily; TED Translators, which provides subtitles and interactive transcripts as well as translations from volunteers worldwide; the educational initiative TED-Ed. TED has established The Audacious Project that takes a collaborative approach to funding ideas with the potential to create change at thrilling scale; TEDx, which supports individuals or groups in hosting local, self- organized TED-style events around the world, and the TED Fellows program, helping world-changing innovators from around the globe to amplify the impact of their remarkable projects and activities.
From October 31 to November 12, in Glasgow, Scotland, the UK will be hosting the 26th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26). The COP26 Summit will bring parties together to accelerate action towards the goals of the Paris Agreement and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change. Simultaneously, TED will be hosting The Countdown Summit-Countdown to a better future, which will bring together 1,000 leaders in Edinburgh, Scotland, in October, as TED speakers share a blueprint for a beautiful net-zero future. This plan – along with inspiring stories of local action – will be amplified by hundreds of TEDx Countdown events worldwide and through a special global live stream event on October 30.
In March 2021, the County of Hawaiʻi hosted the Sustainability Summit. The Summit garnered international attention and has spotlighted our island as a global leader for sustainability. To continue Mayor Roth's commitment to a sustainable future, the County of Hawaiʻi will participate in the TEDx Countdown Summit in its presentation "TEDxCountyofHawaiʻi: Local Insights Grow Global Solutions." It will provide an opportunity to inspire change-makers and visionaries to share stories and efforts to address climate change and nurture sustainability and resilience.
Through TED, millions of potential viewers worldwide will have the opportunity to understand the unique approach embraced on the Hawaiʻi Island using both scientific and traditional knowledge to mitigate climate change. We have a group of ten inspiring individuals committed to speaking, each of whom will focus on unique innovations and traditional knowledge that will set us apart from the thousands of Countdown events happening around the globe.
